Department of Theory and Methodology
The Department of Theory and Methodology was established in 1985. Its first director was Yu. N. Zakharuk, followed by V. I. Gulyaev from 1986 to 1994, I. S. Kamenetsky from 1994 to 2003, and V. I. Gulyaev from 2003 to 2015. Since 2016, the department has been headed by D. S. Korobov.
One of the department's main areas of work is the development of general theoretical problems in archaeology. In the area of methodology, the department's work is developing the use of electronic mapping and the compilation of databases. Historiography remains an important area of work for the department.
The Physical Anthropology Group develops and applies original anthropological methods for scientific research in archaeology. The highly professional work of the Foreign Archaeology Group on issues of the productive economy and state (the Syrian Expedition) and on the archaeology of South America and Mesoamerica is noteworthy.
